Chevy Ends Building Transmissions in Canada

Chevrolet and Tremec are bringing a key piece of Corvette performance back under tighter control. Since 2022, some of the Corvette’s eight-speed dual-clutch transmissions were assembled at GM’s St. Catharines plant in Ontario. But as the C8 lineup grows, Tremec has ended that arrangement. Now, all of these transmissions are once again fully assembled at Tremec’s Michigan facility, where the company that engineered them can oversee every step of production.
Why the shift? It’s not just geography, it’s quality control. With more powerful and complex Corvettes on the road, tighter oversight on materials, tolerances, and testing helps ensure the gearbox lives up to the car’s performance promise. Meanwhile, GM’s St. Catharines plant isn’t going away, it’s shifting focus to build next-gen gasoline V8 engines. And of course, Corvettes continue to roll off the line in Bowling Green, Kentucky, as they always have.

In March of 2015 I took delivery of my Blade Silver Metallic Corvette.
In 2020 one of the colors offered for the new C8 was Rapid Blue. No need to go into detail on what a full paint job would cost; in January 2022, I had the car wrapped in Sky Blue, a color offered in 3M’s Vehicle Wrap inventory. I’m still receiving positive comments just about every day, not to mention the thumbs up I receive from other drivers..and not just Corvette owners.
