HARDTOP CONVERTIBLE AND C8.R REVEALED
October 3, 2019Dateline October 2nd: With all of the hoopla and over-the-top positive press surrounding the introduction of the 1st mid-engine Corvette ever produced, you would think GM would want to take a breather for a bit and rest on its laurels. But you would be wrong! Because, yesterday they decided to do it all over again by introducing the first mid-engine Corvette Hardtop Convertible! The invitation only event was held at the Motoring Club in Marina Del Rey, CA. and Corvette Mike was there! The car made its debut to an anxiously awaiting crowd of press and car enthusiasts alike. And they were not disappointed!
If you thought the C8 Coupe was a home run, then the Convertible is a grand slam! The beautiful lines of the C8 lend themselves perfectly to the Convertible body style. And this isn’t just a Coupe without a roof. The C8 was born to be a drop-top! The roofline has been modified. And dare we say, it offers a sleeker profile than the Coupe. The top mechanism is fully automatic and the operation is quick and trick, with the “Targa” center section of the roof disappearing under a hard cover in the rear in 16 seconds and at speeds up to 30 mph. There is a small glass section between two “pods” that can be raised and lowered to help prevent wind buffeting at speed. The interior features leather, aluminum and carbon fiber throughout. There’s no “imitation” anything. And you can plainly see the quality of workmanship from the outside to when you slip behind the wheel. Just as the 2020 Stingray shocked us with all with its low-price tag, the 2020 Stingray convertible comes in at a startlingly affordable $67,495 (not including destination fee). The best Corvette ever? Who are we to argue?
During a sister event at the Kennedy Space Center, GM unveiled a race car version of the C8. There aren’t many details about the racing version, but the C8.R is visibly wider than the roadgoing 2020 Stingray, with added splitters, vents and wings attached to every surface. They should do a lot to keep the car planted on the track when it makes its debut at Daytona in January at the Rolex 24.
