Another IMSA Team Championship

Another IMSA Team Championship

October 25, 2018 0 By Laura

This was a wild year of racing in the 2018 IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship. The GT class was very competitive, with the #3 Corvette unable to win a single race. But as usual, the Corvette was ultra-reliable and even able to continue racing after some mishaps. This allowed the #3 Corvette C.7R of Jan Magnussen, Antonio Garcia, Mike Rockenfeller and Marcel Fassler to accumulate enough points to narrowly beat out the 2nd place #67 Ford GT of Ryan Briscoe, Richard Westbrook and reigning IndyCar champion Scott Dixon.

All the cars in the GT class brought vastly different approaches to design to make this a very diverse race year. The Corvette C.7R had its naturally aspirated V8, Ford with EcoBoost twin-turbo V6, Porsche with a re-arranged mid-engined flat-six, BMW with their long wheel-based twin-turbo V8 and Ferrari with their 488 GTE.

As mentioned above, the #3 Corvette did not get a single race win, so how was it that the Corvette team came out on top? With the way the IMSA series has its points structure (first place = 35 points, second = 32 points, third = 30 points, fourth = 28 points, etc.), consistency is rewarded just as much as achieving overall race wins. With the #3 Corvette on the podium 8 times, and the #67 Ford only had one podium finish, aside from its 3 victories, the #3 Corvette finished with 322 points compared to the #67 Ford with 316 points.
